marines

Yesterday was a very cool day. I was recording a video for the Jornal do Brasil, in an event that is happening in the port of the city. It is a meeting of the navies of the Latin American countries, where frigates from different countries meet in a public exhibition, with the aim of strengthening the ties of friendship between countries. Between one video and another I was able to make some photographs, and I confess that I had more fun with the stills. 🙂 I have not updated for some time and my instagram and neither blog. I do not always find time to just shoot photography, since my life now revolves around videos. Which, of course, makes me very happy, but photography is also a great passion.

riot

Things in Rio de Janeiro are getting worst. What a week. A municipal parliament were brutal murdered by uncertain reasons, but is becoming clear that were by her activism against federal intervention in our province. It is a really serious situation. Many demonstrations through all country in memory of Marielle Franco. Tough time.

another day

Just another day over here. I took this shot this afternoon. It’s being fun to have my camera always with me. I go to the streets looking for some new gaze into the ordinary things. The same old story…this thing to find something new among ordinary… I mean, It is an old story of photography, but everyone see a different thing every moment. That is why photography is so special.

my life

I’m at a good time in my life. I’m pretty focused on what I have to do, and I feel free. My only responsibility is to evolve in what I do, in what I love to do – images. I’m where I wanted to be, and to continue being like this depends on me and on my evolution. Aware that nothing is forever and that everything is in motion. I just have to watch out and give my best. These photos are just a few random places I had to be during this week for a shoot. While filming, I tryed to make some pictures too. I turned a kind of youtuber (only behing the camera) to a local newspaper. My new profession seems to me to be very modern. I were hired to filming, interviewing and editing. I spend the days chasing  stories about the city and interesting people. All that I wanted to do.

back to adobe lightroom

I’ve been using the VSCO application prests to retouch my images, but this morning after this shoot, when I tested the different filters directly from my phone, I did not like the final look at all. I was really enjoying using this app for the ease of downloading the images from camera to my phone by wifi, but I soon realized that the lightroom is irreplaceable. The work to achieve the desired tonality is greater, so spend more time retouching the photos, but now I am sure  that no mobile application can achieve the result that the lightroom can. The original photo is very different from this. I really liked that result. It’s a simple image, but I like to work lately with a soft color palette and low contrast.

Tour Guide

random passages

My photographic wanderings continue to portray the same space as the last posts, that is, those around my neighborhood here in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro. I think it will continue this way until I can come up with better shots of ideas of light and composition. To capture a more elaborate light the photographer has to know at what time it will touch on a certain surface, what kind of shadow and contrast it will generate. Of course I’m always open for this moment, when this encounter with the perfect light occurs spontaneously. The moment I realize that I’m in the right place at the right time so I do not miss the opportunity to shoot! But it’s not always so. So photography also requires planning. As I’ve been saying, these posts are not planned. These images are the result of my random passages through the streets.

Simplify

certain crisis

Until recently I only wanted to make photographs of landscapes, highly elaborated, technically beautiful. Suddenly I realized that because of this, I was shooting very little. Landscape photography requires large displacements, and at the moment of my life, I have to stay right here in my city. It was then that, two weeks ago or so I went out with the camera and happened to photograph the things I saw. Since then I’ve never stopped. I’m addicted to going out with the camera daily and photographing the streets and people. The result is that I’m not producing very elaborate images, but at least I’m shooting every day. My big question today is if this, for my personal portfolio in instagram it is healthy. I used to post only my best pictures. Now I am a little freer from this self-imposition. Before I wanted to give a more consistent look to my landscape production, but it occurred to me that I posted much less. By a suggestion of a reader here in the blog I created a specific account for this type of image more uncompromising, and I’m posting … The result of this experience is that I find myself in a crisis of identity, that is, in the impossibility of doing the photos that I really like, the one of landscapes, I went to make photos of the streets made almost in any way. On the one hand I find it healthy to photograph daily and post on instagram and here on the blog, on the other, my work is getting less elaborate. It is up to me now to try to find a middle ground between producing more consistent images, mainly in terms of ideas of light and framing, while maintaining a periodicity in terms of publication … I hope I am not charging too much

Creature

carnival

Here in Rio de Janeiro we are at the carnival. It’s a time of year when the whole city seems to be in a frenzy, in an ecstasy, people go crazy, driven by alcohol and drugs. When I got up in the morning I decided to take a look at this climate of the city, maybe it would give me some good pictures. Upon arriving at the beach of Ipanema there was a crowded crowd, drinking caipirinhas, vodka, beer, smoking … I went alone. Walking around the streets, I tried to listen to somebody else’s conversation, trying to understand where all that happiness really came from. I realized there was a reason everyone was dressed up … I felt like a fish out of water. The sun was burning on my shoulders and I decided to sit on a waterfront kiosk and drink some coconut water (where this picture was taken). Since I did not like the party, I realized that I would not be able to get good pictures. It is necessary to flow with the environment. It was not my case today.

Sympathize

what I’ve been saying

Another example of what I’ve been saying about always taking the camera with me every time I leave the house. I just had to go get some money to pay my gardener, but then I decided to go into an old bar and sit down. I answered some messages through whatsapp, and suddenly I took the camera from the backpack. I discovered this framework that captured this perimeter and chair at the same time as an outside area of the bar where several people were passing by. I tried several shots until I got this boy walking. His green shirt was also a good counterpoint to the red of the chairs. And so we follow. I do not know until when I will continue in this phase of daily photography, which for me today is an experiment, because I also work with video. In fact, one of the dilemmas that I live is if I make videos or still photography.  It is not easy to do both in one sigle day.  My videos are made in another camera, the blackmagic pocket cinema, so is challenging to carry both cameras at the same time. The past few days, as you may noticed in the blog, I am quite active with still photography and I love it. But the video side is calling me too. 🙂 Nice dilemas…

a new discovery every day

Has been very stimulating for me to leave the house with the camera in hand since last week. In fact, the kind of photography that has always interested me is the landscape. But this type of photography, almost always, requires great displacements, trips, and therefore, the production of them at least in my case, occurs in a much lower rate. So, since last week I decided to work with what I have, that is, my own neighborhood, my own city. I then turned my attention to street photography, as seen in previous posts. I do not think these photos are magnificent from a technical or even an artistic point of view. But in my opinion, and from the feedback I’ve been receiving, they have something interesting because they record a small fraction of the time in a certain space (the Rio das Pedras neighborhood, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) where we can contemplate a certain drama of life of people living in a place with precarious urban infrastructure. Life here is not easy, definitely. The great discovery that I have made when taking the camera daily is that even if the place does not change, that is, even photographed the same streets, the same places, and even the same people every day, there is always something new to see, a new discovery every day, a new look every day. This is amazing. Photography provides a new discovery; the scenes, lights, textures that for me and for most people went unnoticed till then. I find that fascinating. This post is only to complement the previous one, life is in color with a few more photos.
